PRSI for the self-employed: Class S
Last updated 16 October 2026
Self-employed income of €5,000 or more pays Class S PRSI, with a €650 minimum. Rates rise each 1 October, so self-assessment uses a blended rate.
If you're self-employed with income of €5,000 or more a year, you pay Class S PRSI. It is charged on your income after capital allowances (the cost of equipment written off over several years), with a minimum of €650.
The rate for your return
PRSI rates rise each 1 October. Because the rate changes part way through the year, Revenue uses a blended rate for self-assessed income:
| Income for | Rate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 4.125% | 4.1% to September, 4.2% from October |
| 2026 | 4.2375% | 4.2% to September, 4.35% from October |
| 2027 (expected) | 4.3875% | 4.35% to September, 4.5% from October under the 2024 schedule |
On profits of €40,000 for 2026, that's €1,695.00.
Class S counts towards the State Pension (Contributory), Maternity Benefit and Jobseeker's Benefit for the Self-Employed, among others.
