Claim back four years of tax

Common questions

How far back can I claim tax?

Four years. You can claim 2022 to 2025 now. Claims for 2022 close on 31 December 2026, and Revenue can't repay that year after it.

How do I claim for past years?

In myAccount, choose 'Review your tax for the previous 4 years'. For each year, request a Statement of Liability (your tax summary for that year), then complete the Income Tax Return and add your credits. Revenue pays refunds by bank transfer.

Why is my refund less than the credits added up?

A credit can only cut the income tax you paid that year. If your credits come to more than your tax, the rest is lost. Credits don't reduce USC or PRSI.

Can claiming leave me owing tax?

Only if you paid too little tax in that year anyway, for example from a second job. This page warns you if your figures show that. Check the year before you file it.
