What counts towards net worth (what you own less what you owe)?

Everything you own that has a value (cash, investments, pensions, property) less everything you owe (mortgage, loans, credit cards). Pensions count, though you can't spend them until you retire.

Why show it in today's money?

Inflation shrinks what money buys. At 2% a year, €100,000 in 10 years buys what €82,034.83 buys today.
