Claiming tax back during the year
Last updated 16 October 2026
You don't have to wait for the year to end. Add credits in myAccount now and your payslips show less tax, or claim health expenses as you go.
Most credits and reliefs can be claimed for the current year, not only after it ends. When you add one in myAccount, Revenue updates the credits your employer uses. You pay less tax on each payslip from then on, and you may get a refund for the months already passed.
What you can claim now
- Rent Tax Credit: claimed in-year for rent you pay this year.
- Health expenses: through Real-Time Credit, with an image of each receipt, as you go.
- Flat rate expenses for your job.
- Tuition fees, once paid.
- Remote working relief: from 2026 you can claim during the year, uploading your bills to Receipts Tracker.
- Credits that follow a change in your life, such as the Single Person Child Carer Credit or the Age Tax Credit.
An example
A single employee on €52,000 in 2026 pays €1,400 a month in rent, has €600 of medical bills and works from home 90 days.
| Claim | Amount | Tax back |
|---|---|---|
| Remote working costs | €155.34 | €62.14 |
| Health expenses (20%) | €120.00 | €120.00 |
| Rent Tax Credit | €16,800.00 | €1,000.00 |
In all, €1,182.14 for the year: about €98.51 a month if claimed in January.
How in-year relief is paid
Revenue spreads the relief across the year. The part for the months already gone can come back as a refund. You must have paid at least that much tax and be on the cumulative basis. The rest is added to your tax credits, so each later payslip takes less tax. Revenue's manual gives the example of €2,800 of health expenses claimed in April. A third comes back straight away and the rest through the following eight payslips.
Now or later: the total is the same
Claiming now or on next year's return gives the same amount in the end. Claiming now puts the money in your pocket sooner; waiting means one refund. If your pay or circumstances may change, it can be simpler to claim once the year is over, when the figures are final.
Next year
From January 2027 you can claim 2027 credits in the same way. Budget 2027 raises the Rent Tax Credit to €1,150, once Finance (No. 2) Bill 2026 is enacted.
