Married couples
Pension contributions and joint assessment
Pension relief limits are for each person, but the relief is at the household's top rate of tax.
Each spouse gets tax relief on pension contributions up to their own limit, which depends on their age and earnings. Under joint assessment, the relief is given at the rate your joint income reaches. So if the couple pays tax at 40%, contributions by either spouse save 40%.
