Variable income and joint assessment
When one spouse's income goes up and down, joint assessment evens out the household's tax.
If one of you is self-employed or on commission, joint assessment lets unused band and credits from a quiet year help the other spouse. Couples who file a tax return (Form 11) settle the final figure there. So base your preliminary tax (tax paid in advance for the year) on what you owe together.
