Can I get the council's thatched buildings grant?

Common questions

How much is the thatched buildings grant?

Up to €20,000, and at most 80% of the cost. Councils often give less, to help more buildings.

Does the building need to be protected?

No. Any old thatched building can apply: a home, a pub, a shop or a farm building.

Can I get the Department's Thatching Grant too?

Yes, for a thatched house you live in. It pays up to €3,810, or more with a medical card, at any time of year. Each form asks about the other.

When can I apply?

Once a year. The 2027 call closes on 30 October 2026, or earlier at some councils. Urgent work can be asked about at any time.
