Common questions

How much is the septic tank grant?: 85% of the cost of fixing, upgrading or replacing the septic tank, up to €12,000. The council decides the cost it accepts.
Can anyone with a septic tank get it?: No. Your tank must have failed a council inspection, or your home must be in an Area for Action or a High Status area. You need the council's notice or letter.
What's a High Status area?: A river or lake catchment kept to the highest standard. The Department's map, searched by Eircode, shows if your home is in one. Then you ask the council for a letter.
Does it pay for emptying the tank?: No. Emptying it (de-sludging), servicing and upkeep are for the owner. The grant is for repairs, an upgrade or a new system.
Do I need planning permission?: Usually not, for repairing or upgrading the septic tank you have. Ask your council's planning section if you're not sure.
