Married couples
The year you marry
You're each taxed as single in the year you marry. After the year ends, you can claim back what joint assessment would have saved.
In the year you marry or register a civil partnership, you're each taxed as single people. After the year ends, you can ask Revenue to look at it again. If joint assessment would have meant less tax, you get a refund for the part of the year after the wedding. Joint assessment then applies from 1 January of the next year.
