Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT)
Tax on gifts and inheritances above your lifetime threshold, at 33%.
Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) is paid by the person receiving the gift or inheritance. Each person has lifetime thresholds depending on their relationship to the giver. Budget 2027 raised them from 7 October 2026. They are now €420,000 for children (Group A), €44,000 for other close relatives (Group B) and €22,000 for everyone else (Group C).
Gifts up to €3,000 from each person each year are exempt. A return (Form IT38) is due by 31 October for gifts and inheritances with a valuation date in the year to 31 August.
